Des Buckingham delighted to see much-changed Oxford build on Norwich win in cup

Oxford boss Des Buckingham was delighted with his squad players after making eight changes yet still seeing plenty of quality in their 2-0 Carabao Cup win over League One Peterborough.

First-half goals from Tyler Goodrham and debutant Matt Phillips gave Championship new boys Oxford a comfortable victory, as Posh rued missing good early chances.

Buckingham said: “We spoke about the importance of carrying on the momentum from Saturday against Norwich (2-0 win) and some of the football we played in the first half was excellent.

“The best thing for me was seeing the players who came in understanding what their role is.

“We’re going to need all of the players we’ve got in the Championship this season.

“And to be able to get minutes into those players who will be challenging for a place at Coventry on Friday was important.

“I thought Matt (Phillips) was very good – he showed his quality on the ball and with his goal.”

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson said: “At the moment we’re just a bit short in both boxes.

“The positive thing for me is that we created a lot of chances. We started the game really well, but then gifted them a goal.

“There were similarities to Saturday against Huddersfield in that they were two awful goals again. We just let them run past us for the second goal which is poor.

“But Oxford are a good team, especially at home.

“It’s not a great start for us with two defeats from two games and no goals, but we’ve played two strong teams.

“Our wide men were good tonight, we just need to show a bit more resilience.”
