Nathan Jones furious as Charlton are ‘outfought’ in cup upset against Cambridge

Nathan Jones expressed great disappointment at his Charlton side’s display as they exited the Carabao Cup.

League Two Cambridge reached the third round for only the fifth time in their history with a deserved 3-1 success after goals from James Brophy, Kylian Kouassi and Zak Bradshaw.

Ibrahim Fullah had scored for the Addicks to make it 2-1 before half-time but they were well beaten and had Karoy Anderson dismissed in second-half stoppage time.

Charlton boss Jones said: “I thought we were way off our levels, our standards. We were outbattled, outfought.

“They didn’t have to do much. There’s three or four things in all of those goals that we could have done better that we do really well normally.

“I didn’t see any fight, any energy. Normally we outwork, outpress, outrun teams. Tonight I can’t remember us doing that.

“We were second best all over. It was unrecognisable for a team that we put out. Until we went totally under-21s at the end we didn’t really test their goal with any regularity.”

Cambridge boss Neil Harris declared it “a brilliant evening for us” after his team’s victory.

He added: “Cup football is all about getting through. Play badly, play well, however you win you just have to get through.

“We’ve done that and in the meantime we’ve played extremely well, scored some really good goals.

“I thought we were the better team against a very strong Championship outfit.

“Before the game we talked about (how) it’s three home games in ten days. We’ve ticked the first box by winning that, we have to make sure we win on Saturday.”
