Partick Thistle miss chance to put pressure on leaders St Johnstone as both draw

Partick Thistle missed the chance to put pressure on Scottish Championship leaders St Johnstone as the top two were held to draws on Saturday.

Saints were held goalless by Ayr at McDiarmid Park, where the hosts’ Toby Steward was the busier of the two goalkeepers in a tight contest, keeping out efforts from Ethan Walker and Marco Rus.

But second-placed Thistle, six points behind with a game in hand, could not take advantage as they were held 1-1 by Arbroath.

Logan Chalmers put the hosts ahead just five minutes in with a curling effort, but Findlay Marshall levelled just after the hour with a close-range finish.

Thistle edged three points clear of third-placed Raith Rovers, who were beaten 2-0 away to Ross County, who won a league fixture for the first time in seven months thanks to late goals.

Debutant Miller Thomson, on loan from Dundee United, got the first, tucking in the rebound from Jordan White’s shot in the 73rd minute.

And as the game moved into stoppage time Ronan Hale doubled the lead, finding the bottom corner of the net after breaking through one-on-one.

Jackson Longridge’s strike gave Greenock Morton their first win of the season as they beat Airdrieonians 2-1 on the road.

Tomi Adeloye had put the visitors in front four minutes into the second half, turning in Cameron Blues’ cross, but that lead lasted only three minutes before Euan Henderson equalised after Cole McKinnon won the ball back.

But in the 83rd minute Longridge arrived in the box to head in Michael Garrity’s cross, leaving the hosts rooted to the foot of the table.

Dunfermline and Queens Park shared the points from a goalless draw, with the hosts unable to take any of a series of chances, the best of them coming when Charlie Gilmour headed against the crossbar in the first half.
