Carabao Cup: Fulham survive scare as Brentford end Grimsby’s giant-killing run

Issa Diop converted the winning spot-kick as Fulham survived a mighty scare at Wycombe to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals by winning 5-4 on penalties after the tie ended 1-1.

Josh King’s close-range finish early in the second half cancelled out Cauley Woodrow’s early opener for the Chairboys against his former club.

Wycombe goalkeeper Will Norris saved from Ryan Sessegnon and Jonah Kusi-Asare in the shootout, but Fulham’s Benjamin Lecomte kept out efforts from Ewan Henderson, Fred Onyedinma and Donnell McNeilly, leaving Diop to convert the sudden-death winner.

Grimsby’s giant-killing run was halted in emphatic fashion by Brentford, who progressed to the last eight with a 5-0 win at Blundell Park.

The Mariners, sixth in Sky Bet League Two, knocked Manchester United out in a stunning second-round upset and followed that up in round three with victory at Sheffield Wednesday, but the gulf in class told against Brentford.

The Premier League side, who made nine changes, led 3-0 at half-time through goals from Mathias Jensen, Keane Lewis-Potter and on-loan Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson.

Fabio Carvalho converted a 54th-minute penalty for the Bees after he had been fouled and substitute Nathan Collins headed home their fifth.

Will Fish’s first Cardiff goal clinched the Bluebirds a 2-1 win at Wrexham and a place in the last eight in the first meeting between the two sides in 21 years.

Yousef Salech tapped visitors into a half-time lead and after former Cardiff forward Kieffer Moore had headed Wrexham level in the second period, Fish volleyed home a 71st-minute winner to seal Brian Barry-Murphy’s side the win.
