Charlton manager Nathan Jones labelled Sonny Carey a “revelation” after his stoppage-time winner in the 1-0 victory against West Brom in the Championship.
The 24-year-old struck in the fifth minute of added time – his fifth goal since joining the Addicks on a free transfer from Blackpool.
West Brom goalkeeper Joshua Griffiths kept out Greg Docherty’s first-half penalty and made a superb stop to deny Carey in the 55th minute.
But Griffiths was beaten when Carey hit a 30-yard strike which deflected off Baggies substitute Chris Mepham and squirmed underneath the visiting keeper.
“We were excellent tonight, apart from the odd counter attack against us,” said Jones, after seeing his side climb to fifth in the Championship table.
“We should score the penalty and be 1-0 up. Then their keeper made a world-class save from Sonny Carey. You will not see a better save than that for a long, long time.
“I said to Sonny at the end of the game to go and enjoy it. You don’t often get 17,000 or 20,000, however many were here, singing your name.
“Every pass and touch he has is forward. Whatever run he makes is forward. Every shot zings or tests something. He has been an absolute revelation and it’s why we’ve brought him to the football club.
“It was thoroughly deserved. The subs gave us a massive impetus late on. It would have been a travesty if we didn’t win it or they had nicked something.
“We’re in a good place. The players are giving me everything. It was a wonderful night.”
West Brom have taken one point from a possible 12 and have lost four away games in a row.
Baggies head coach Ryan Mason said: “It’s a painful way to lose a game. I can speak so much about the performance and the chances we created, but the reality is we’ve lost the game and we’ve lost too many games of football at this time.
“The responsibility is mine – absolutely. I can see and feel the players are giving everything. They are committed, so I certainly can’t question that. It is down to me to change the situation we’re in and get more out of them – give them more.
“We came here to win and we could have with the moments we created. Did we play a good match? Yeah – but we lost.
“When you lose games it is the coach’s responsibility. At the moment it is not good enough. I need to find a way to change it.”
