Harry Kane is first Englishman to score 50 CL goals as Bayern see off Atalanta

Harry Kane became the first English player to hit 50 Champions League goals, scoring twice as Bayern Munich humbled Atalanta again to complete a 10-2 aggregate win.

The Bundesliga giants set up a mouth-watering quarter-final against Real Madrid, following up their 6-1 victory in Bergamo with a 4-1 home success at the Allianz Arena.

Kane hit the first two, a retaken penalty and a brilliantly worked second, to bring up his half-century in 66 games and take his season’s tally to 47.

Lennart Karl and Luis Diaz added to the scoring as Bayern racked up double figures for the tie, before a late consolation for Lazar Samardzic.

There had been worries that Bayern’s raft of injury problems in goal would mean an emergency outing for 16-year-old Leonard Prescott but in the end they were able to call on Jonas Urbig, cleared for duty after recovering from a blow to the head. There were outfield changes too, headlined by the return of Kane as central striker and captain.

Leading the side for the first time in European action, the England man created Bayern’s first opportunity when he picked out Raphael Guerreiro, who failed to take advantage.

Kamaldeen Sulemana produced an excellent piece of skill when he flicked a backheel to Gianluca Scamacca but Bayern were making most of the running, Diaz getting just too much on a clever chipped effort after Isak Hien’s misplaced defensive header.

The pressure did not relent, Guerreiro, Tom Bischof and Aleksandar Pavlovic keeping Marco Sportiello busy in the Atalanta goal. The opener came after Giorgio Scalvini’s handball handed the hosts a penalty, but it was far from straightforward, Kane seeing his spot-kick saved only to get a second chance due to early movement from Sportiello.

There was no doubt about the retake, Kane breaking the deadlock. With a huge lead in the bank, Bayern were enjoying their football and giving plenty of possession to highly rated 18-year-old Karl, who is hotly tipped for a Germany call-up this month.

He had no qualms about trying his luck, taking aim on several occasions without finding the perfect finish. Urbig proved his worth either side of the interval, saving well from Mario Pasalic just before the break and Scamacca early in the second period.

With their best not quite good enough, Atalanta could only stand by as Kane brought up his Champions League milestone, netting a beauty in the 54th minute. With plenty of work to do as he approached the box, he showed outstanding footwork to earn himself a shooting opportunity before hammering home a rising effort.

The Serie A side shipped another inside two minutes, Kane and Diaz shuttling the ball at pace to Karl, who connected well to get on the scoresheet.

Bayern were not done yet, helping themselves to another as Karl turned creator for Diaz. Having seen his early lob creep over, the Colombian got the weight perfect this time.

La Dea did manage to salvage the slimmest of consolations with the final goal of a two-legged hammering, Samaradzic heading past Urbig to reduce the already vast deficit.
