Danny Rohl delighted with Rangers result and performance against Aberdeen

Danny Rohl got the double boost he was looking for as Rangers’ 4-1 win over Aberdeen at Ibrox moved them in to second place in the William Hill Premiership behind Hearts.

The boss claimed on Friday his side would be “tough to stop” if they married performances to results and he was delighted to see midfielder Tochi Chukwuani open the scoring in the 35th minute before 18-year-old Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore added a second three minutes after the break.

Dennis Geiger reduced the deficit but goals from midfielder Nico Raskin and captain James Tavernier moved Rangers back to within three points of Hearts, leapfrogging Celtic into second place, albeit the Hoops can go back behind the Edinburgh club with a win at Dundee United on Sunday.

Rohl said: “A great performance, over 90, 95 minutes.

“We spoke about this result and performance today, I think we saw both and that’s what makes me really happy today, to see my team perform like this.

“We want to see goals, I think this is always great. I’m a manager, I also want to see clean sheets.

“This is the only small thing today after the 2-0 that we bring this team back for a short moment.

“But in general, how we played with a lot of intensity, we were very aggressive against the ball, good positioning in possession.

“In general, a small statement, especially with the goal difference as well, we won the last two cup finals and now we have seven to go.”

Rangers fans again chanted for Moore and Rohl admits he, like the supporters, would also like the teenager to extend his loan spell at the club.

He said: “Me as well. There’s no question mark. I think we are in a good position, we are very clear what we want.

“I think it’s also helpful now that we have the idea of how I want to play football, committed with Andrew (Cavenagh, chairman), with Dan (Purdey, head of recruitment), with the good people around me, everything goes in the right direction.

“The fans love him, I like him, he’s a key player. I think there’s a lot of good things where we could go again together, but we know he’s still not our player, let’s work in the next couple of weeks in all those directions.”

After his first away game as Dons boss Stephen Robinson admitted his side are in a “scrap” to avoid relegation.

Aberdeen are just three points ahead of St Mirren and Kilmarnock – who are in the relegation play-off spot – with bottom side Livingston 12 points adrift and doomed.

The former St Mirren boss said: “Very, very frustrating. We can’t defend like that at Ibrox and expect to get anything.

“If you get beaten by James’ goal, then fine, you hold your hands up.

“But the other three goals aren’t acceptable. It’s been the story of the season, long before I came here as well.

“I told them a few home truths. Maybe if that had been done six, seven months ago, people would have stepped up.

“But I told them the truth tonight. They accepted that.

“They had no choice but to accept it because the facts are we’re in a scrap.”
