Last year's boundary change recommendations saw 8,569 voters in North Roscommon based around Boyle returning to the Roscommon-Galway constituency.

There will be at least one new TD in Sligo/Leitrim after Marc MacSharry, formerly Fianna Fáil and more recently an Independent, announced that he is not running.

However, that is not the end of the MacSharry political dynasty just yet. Edel McSharry, who is Marc's cousin and niece of former Tánaiste, minister and European Commissioner Ray MacSharry will be running.

This is the first time that Fianna Fáil will not have a sitting TD or senator contesting the election in the constituency.

Last time out, Martin Kenny took over 26% of the vote and will be confident again while Independent Marian Harkin has decided to go again having previously indicated that she might step down.

However, the former MEP, who is now 70, will face opposition from her former assistant Marie Casserly, a County Councillor.

Fine Gael’s Deputy Frank Feighan will be hampered somewhat by his hometown of Boyle returning to the Roscommon-Galway constituency. In the last election in 2020, around a quarter of his vote came from north Roscommon close to his political heartland of Boyle, which he can no longer count on.

Candidates: Martin Kenny (Sinn Féin), Deputy Marian Harkin (Independent), Deputy Frank Feighan (Fine Gael), Cllr. Marie Casserly (Independent), Cllr. Michael Clarke (Independent Ireland), Cllr. Edel McSharry (Fianna Fáil), Cllr. Nessa Cosgrove (Labour Party), Chris McManus (Sinn Féin), Eamon Scanlon (Fianna Fáil), Graham Monaghan (Aontú), Michael Kelly (The Irish People), Bláithín Gallagher (Green Party), Des Guckian (Independent), Paddy O’Rourke (Fianna Fáil), Gino O’Boyle (People Before Profit), Molly Candon (Party of Animal Welfare).
