Injury forces early retirement for classy juvenile Staya

George Scott has announced the retirement of classy juvenile Staya after the filly sustained an injury.

A Listed winner at Sandown in early July, she subsequently placed in both the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot and York’s Lowther Stakes.

The Havana Grey filly was being aimed at the Flying Childers this week but has now run her last race.

“She’s picked up an injury, nothing too serious but enough that we’d have to give her a really sizeable time off the track,” said Scott.

“She’s a Listed-winning two-year-old and is multiple Group placed, so we’ve just decided that she will retire.

“I imagine when they decide to cover her, the end of next year or whenever that may be, she’ll be perfect for that job – she’s a very fast two-year-old, by an exceptional stallion and she has all the form in the book.

“Horses like her are very hard to buy, so she’ll be very valuable to their broodmare band.

“It’s such a shame though, I love that filly. She’s been one of my favourites for lots of reasons, so it is a little bit of a bitter pill to swallow to be honest.

“I just don’t think she’s had a chance to show how good she is and in sport that is one of the saddest things, when injury prevents that, it’s so cruel.”
