James Owen hoping Frankie Dettori free for Hawkeye Cup bid

James Owen believes Wimbledon Hawkeye has all the attributes to thrive at the Breeders’ Cup – and is hoping to have the services of Frankie Dettori aboard his Nashville Derby hero once again in Del Mar.

The son of Kameko has been a model of consistency in a multitude of top events this term and landed the first victory of his three-year-old season when making the trip to Kentucky Downs for the valuable event.

He is now back in Newmarket tuning up for an American return and a trip to California this time, for a crack at the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Owen said: “He really enjoyed his trip to America, like we all did, and he’s had an easy two weeks since getting back after the race. He’s back doing routine canters now and looks fantastic and we’re aiming at the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

“It is going to be a much stronger race, but an absolute privilege for myself and my team to be going there with a horse that has a chance.”

Owen reaped the benefit of Dettori’s wealth of experience at Kentucky Downs and is hopeful the Italian will be at his disposal once again in Del Mar, a track the Newmarket handler feels will play to the strengths of his nimble colt who will return Stateside fully freshened up.

He added: “I’ve never been to Del Mar, but it’s a tight track and I think it will suit him as he’s an agile horse and the extra furlong of the race will suit, so it’s exciting.

“Hopefully Frankie can ride and he’s pretty much assured me he can and that will be great.

“He’s been consistent and I was thrilled for the horse more than anything when he won in America. He’s been busy this year, but this will probably be his longest break he’s having now into a race.”
