George Scott was on “cloud nine” after Bay City Roller relished conditions in Munich to end the year a Group One winner following an emphatic all-the-way success in the Grosser Allianz Preis von Bayern.
The Newmarket handler has been at pains to find the perfect underfoot terrain for his three-year-old all season and after some fine efforts in defeat, he set his charge one final assignment on German soil.
Sent immediately to the fore in the hands of Adrie de Vries, there was no passing the son of New Bay who simply drew further and further clear of the pursuing Tiffany in the closing stages.
It was the second successive year that Sir Mark Prescott and Elite Racing’s Tiffany has had to settle for second in the final European Group One of the year and she will now head for the Tattersalls December Mares Sale.
However, the day belonged to Bay City Roller and Scott, who was picking up his second career Group One having broken his duck with German St Leger hero Caballo De Mar in the Prix du Cadran last month.
Scott told the PA news agency: “I’m on cloud nine and to win two Group Ones in one year is beyond my wildest dreams, I’m just very lucky with the team I have around me.
“We’ve always thought a huge amount of Bay City Roller, but things just haven’t gone his way and he’s just been either caught out of his ground or the ground hasn’t been soft enough and he really deserved that.
“He got a superb ride off Adrie and it was just lovely to see him finish his season like that.
“It’s a big team effort to keep a horse on the go like he has been and the guys at home have done a great job at reporting back he was in rude health which gave me the confidence to take one more chance with him and run him one more time.
“Shaikh Nasser (of Victorious Racing) just said ‘go for it’ when I suggested it and that’s typical of his sporting mentality and I’m just so pleased for all involved.”
The victory gives Scott plenty to look forward to next year after a season where his Eve Lodge Stables has flourished and made its mark on the big stage.
Scott added: “It sets him up well for next year and it just shows you what he is capable of if he gets conditions in his favour.
“He’ll be campaigned at Group One level all through next year but more than anything we’ll be looking for circumstances which will suit him, some cut in the ground and he’s clearly a horse who enjoyed bowling along on the front and being made plenty use of, so we’ve learned plenty about him today.
“He’s only going to improve physically and he’s a very exciting, well-bred colt and they are very hard to find.
“We felt there was momentum with the stable with the stock we have and the owners in the yard and the staff, so I did feel we ought to make our mark this season at the top level.
“I’m pleased we’ve been able to do that because whatever you feel, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will materialise. We’ve done it now and it’s been an exciting season and hopefully another to prepare for next year.”
