Anglers Crag regains his Eider crown at Newcastle

Anglers Crag became just the third horse to win the Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Eider Handicap Chase as he made all the running to take the Newcastle marathon.

While previous multiple winners Highland Wedding (who won three in the 1960s) and Wyndburgh in the 1950s landed successive renewals, Anglers Crag became the first horse to regain the title.

Having won two years ago for Brian Ellison he was declared for last year’s race but unshipped his jockey and got loose, meaning he was withdrawn.

Owner and breeder Derrick Mossop moved him to Nicky Richards for a change of scenery to spark him back to life and he has been rewarded with a victory at Carlisle and a second Eider.

Danny McMenamin was keen to dictate and when Mr Vango dropped away with over half a mile to run his main threat came from Only The Bold, who made a mistake at the last allowing the 11-year-old Anglers Crag to come away and win by five lengths as the 4-1 joint-favourite.
