Burt native Joe Boyle and his Tooreen side’s quest to become All-Ireland Club Intermediate Hurling champions fell just short as they were beaten by Monaleen at Croke Park.

The Limerick and Munster champions won out 1-17 to 1-15 having not led until seven minutes from time, with Cathal Freeman, Mark O’Dwyer and Donnacha Ó’Dálaigh playing pivotal roles.

Wing-back Boyle, a former Donegal captain, and his Mayo side opened well, scoring the first four points, although Dan Power’s goal for Monaleen levelled it up at 1-3 to 0-6. Liam Lavin’s goal for Tooreen made for a 1-9 to 1-7 lead at the break. They continued on the front foot only to be reeled in late on.

Afterwards, Boyle’s son Bobby, who is two, was with the Tooreen panel on the pitch and got to play on Croke Park’s hallowed turf. James Connors from St Eunan’s was linesman for the final.

Ballybofey-based Garda Ciaran Finn, who is from Mayo, was a member of the 2020 Nickey Rackard Cup winning Donegal panel when they defeated his native countt in the Croke Park final, 3-18 to 0-21. Tooreen is Finn’s home club but he missed the final due to an ACL injury.
