Andy Lee believes Jason Quigley is ’only a phone call away’ from another shot at a world title.
Quigley will have his fight in just over 16 months when he fights Kim Poulsen in Dublin on April 1.
The Ballybofey man has not fought since losing to Demetrius Andrade in November, 2021, but has been stirred back to action again.
Quigley tops the bill at the ’The Return’ card at the National Stadium having pondered his future in the wake of the Andrade defeat.
Having secured a shot at the WBO world middleweight title, Quigley was stopped by Andrade, sustaining a broken jaw in the process.
"The wounds healed . . . they’re a reminder of what I have been through and where I want to go,” Quigley said at a press conference in Dublin.
Lee won the WBO world title in 2014 when downing Matt Korobov in Las Vegas. He now trains Quigley and Paddy Donovan, who will also feature on the April 1 show.
“There is still the ambition to become a world champion,” Lee said.
“The fact that he is here shows that he has the hunger and desire.
“This whole show is a great opportunity. Jason is only a phone call away from fighting for a world title again.”
Barry Walsh of Elite Sports Promotions, the co-promoters of The Return alongside Sheer Sports, is hoping to secure live tv coverage for the bout.
Walsh is aiming to make regular shows in Ireland and believes Quigley’s comeback can help start some momentum.
He said: “There is a massive pool of talent here who just aren’t getting the right opportunities. We want to change that,
“This isn’t just a one-trick pony. We are here to roll this out on a major scale.”
