Work underway on extension to Moville Community College after two-decade wait

Work has commenced on the construction of a 5,275 square metre extension to Moville Community College

Work has begun on the new school building at Moville Community College after a wait of 22 years.

The two-storey extension will more than double the size of the school. It is expected the 5,275 square metre building will open for use in April 2025.

It will include 10 general classrooms, eight specialist teaching rooms, general support spaces including a general-purpose hall, ancillary and administration rooms, PE accommodation including a multi-purpose hall and fitness suite and a special education suite.

The beginning of construction works follows a campaign of more than two decades.

The school opened in 2001 in prefabricated buildings with a permanent structure half the size that had been planned added in 2005. The following year an application for the rest of the school building was made.

The works also include an enclosed link corridor to the existing permanent school building. The development will also include 54 car parking spaces, five universal parking spaces, a new road access and works to the existing site entrance, three new ball courts, a garden/play area, a grass play area, services diversions and the removal of all existing temporary accommodation.

In a social media post, the school said: “This is such an exciting and important day for the entire community of Moville Community College.”

Local TD and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue welcomed the commencement of works.

“It is great to see works beginning and this follows a very productive meeting including representatives from the school, Minister Norma Foley and me recently in Donegal. The project is a game changer for the school and for Moville and will massively improve educational offering. I thank all of those involved with the project.”
