Gemma McGuinness has signed with AFC Bournemouth ahead of the new National League season.

The Greencastle woman moves to Bournemouth from Galway United.

The 28-year-old midfielder recently scored the winner as Galway defeated Cliftonville at The Showgrounds to win the first-ever Avenir Sports All-Island Cup final.

In the semi-final, McGuinness netted the winning penalty in a shoot-out win over Wexford Youths.

McGuinness is relishing the task at her new club.

“It’s exciting to think of what’s ahead,” she said. “I feel like i’ve gained so much in the past couple of months at Galway United.

“It’s all come to life now, I’m excited for a different challenge.

“I think the football over here is very physical and tactical, and ultimately I’m just really looking forward to getting to know everyone. Hopefully I score a few goals and can help the team in the National League this season.”

In 2022, McGuinness played for Sligo Rovers and switched to Galway in January.

Last season, McGuinness caught the eye of Bournemouth boss Steve Cuss when on a brief loan spell at Keynsham. McGuinness has been capped at senior level by Northern Ireland.

Bournemouth face Selsey on Sunday with McGuinness one of five new faces unveiled by the Cherries, who have also recruited Gemma Hillier, Alisha Buckingham, Olivia Venditto and Daniela Kosinska.
