John McNulty content to get Donegal tenure off the mark with victory in Laois

Donegal ladies boss John McNulty

New Donegal ladies boss John McNulty said his side worked hard in extreme conditions and deserved to take full points in their LGFA Division 2 opener away to Laois.

Killybegs’ Susanne White kicked five points in a 0-7 to 0-3 victory while Katy Herron and teenage debutant Eva Gallagher also got on the scoresheet.

“We’re delighted to go down to Laois and in terrible conditions, we got the two points,” McNulty said.

“We were four up at half time but we were also wasteful in that same time. An eight-point lead wouldn’t have flattered us.

“But to be fair, after the turnover and against the breeze, we worked really hard and grabbed three points that pushed us on for victory”.

Former Player of the Year Niamh McLaughlin will once again skipper Donegal and McNulty says her leadership qualities will be vital for what is, on the whole, a young squad.

“Niamh is captain again this year. She’s so experienced and she sets a standard. Kildare at home is another big challenge to look forward to now. They are intermediate champions so we’ll turn attention to that now”
