Cockhill Celtic set to feature in revised FAI Senior Cup next year

FAI introduces changes to Men’s FAI Cup format with Junior Cup finalists and Inishowen side Cockhill Celtic set to feature as one of four junior teams

Last night, the FAI made an official announcement regarding a significant change in the structure of the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Senior Cup that will Cockhill Celtic partake in this inaugural stage.  

They disclosed that what was formerly known as the FAI Cup Preliminary Round, traditionally conducted before the First Round, will now be recognised as the first round. 

In this restructured format, the FAI Cup first round will feature 20 clubs. These will comprise of the last 16 teams from the 2023/’24 FAI Intermediate Cup, along with the final four clubs from the 2023/24 FAI Junior Cup which Cockhill Celtic are a part, with the Inishowen side through to the FAI Junior Cup final following their 1-0 win over Pike Rovers last weekend. 

Following the completion of the first-round matches, League of Ireland clubs will join the competition in the subsequent round. 

The draw for the FAI Senior Cup is scheduled to take place live on the FAI YouTube Channel on Tuesday, April 16, commencing at 12.30.  

During this draw event, the initial 16 teams will be paired off into eight first round ties, while the remaining four clubs will receive byes directly to the second round.
