Stephen McLaughlin has secured promotion with Mansfield Town last night
Isle of Doagh native Stephen McLaughlin experienced pure joy last night as he contributed to Mansfield Town's promotion to SkyBet's League One.
Mansfield secured their promotion with a 2-1 victory over Accrington Stanley at the One Call Stadium.
The 33-year-old McLaughlin has proven to be a pivotal player for Mansfield throughout this season, demonstrating his prowess during the entire match against Accrington while positioned at left-back.
A George Maris cross-turned-shot, which was deflected beyond goalkeeper Radek Vitek by Accrington's Tommy Leigh, gave the Stags the ideal start and had the home fans in raptures from the outset.
A second-half Stephen Quinn goal, which the midfielder tapped home at the second attempt after he was first denied by the goalkeeper, completed an ultimately comfortable win for Nigel Clough's side.
Originally launching his professional career with Finn Harps, McLaughlin later transferred to Derry City in 2011. In 2013, he made the move to Nottingham Forest, where he has since built a commendable career in English football. His tenure with Mansfield began in 2020.
