Training sessions on Autism Spectrum Disorder taking place in Carndonagh

Comprehensive training sessions on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are to be held in Carndonagh later this month.

Families Reaching Out Group, funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs Shared Island Civic Society, is bringing Solas BT7 to provide sessions that aim to empower both staff and parents by enhancing their understanding and practical skills in supporting individuals with autism.

Parents of children with additional needs are welcome to Spraoi agus Spórt on Monday, May 20 from 7pm to 9pm and  Tuesday, May 21 from 9:30am to 11:30am. The sessions will cover topics that include understanding ASD, visuals and communication, emotions, resilience, and emotional regulation.

Training facilitators Kathryn and Michelle are both professionals from Solas BT7 in Belfast and bring a wealth of experience in supporting children with additional needs. Michelle holds a master's degree in Autism, while Kathryn possesses level 3 and level 4 diplomas in supporting individuals with autism and learning disabilities, alongside a level 5 diploma in childcare and leadership. Kathryn oversees the early intervention program for two to four-year-olds, while Michelle coordinates home support and therapeutic services at Solas.

Carndonagh forestry wins award at biodiversity and sustainability festival

Ross Buchanan from Carndonagh won the Production Forestry Award which was presented at the Finding Common Ground  festival 

 

Solas, established in 2008, is a needs-led charity based in Belfast, supporting hundreds of children and young people with disabilities and complex needs annually. It offers a holistic family approach and a range of practical support services, including developmental programs, well-being initiatives for carers, and therapeutic services.

The Families Reaching Out Group initiative, funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs Shared Island Civic Society, aims to bring together two charities to address the needs of disabled children and their families in Inishowen and south Belfast. It facilitates shared learning opportunities for staff, families, and organisational boards, fostering collaboration and best practice sharing.

"Through these sessions, we aim to spread awareness and empower parents and staff with practical skills to better support individuals with autism," said Aine Kelly from Spraoi agus Spórt.

"Solas is dedicated to supporting families and children with additional needs, and we are thrilled to extend our expertise to the Inishowen community," added Joan Henderson from Solas.
