Donegal minors, after losing out to Armagh in the Ulster semi-final on Saturday last in Fr Tierney Park, Ballyshannon, will now take part in the Tier 2 All-Ireland Minor Championship along with 10 other teams.

Donegal lost out to a very physically strong Armagh side by 2-8 to  1-7 and could have no complaints in the end as they found it very difficult in the opening half. They did stage something of a comeback in the last quarter but they came up short.

Armagh advanced to an Ulster final date with Derry this weekend and both of those sides will compete in the Tier 1 All-Ireland championship.

Donegal go into the Tier 2 competition along with three other Ulster teams - Tyrone, Monaghan and Cavan. They are joined by four teams from Leinster (Louth, Kildare, Wexford and Wicklow), by two from Connacht (Galway and Sligo) and Clare from Munster.

There are three preliminary quarter-finals to take the number down to eight teams. Donegal and Tyrone are exempt from the preliminary quarter-finals along with Louth, Kildare and Galway (the defeated semi-finalists in the provinces).

The three preliminary quarter-finals sees Monaghan face Wexford on Thursday night in Abbotstown, Dublin while the other two ties are on Saturday with Cavan hosting Wicklow and Clare hosting Sligo.

The draw for the quarter-finals will be made in Croke Park on Monday and it is believed that counties who have already met in the provincial championships will avoid each other. Barry Ward’s Donegal have already played Tyrone and Monaghan in Ulster.

The quarter-final ties are set for the following weekend - Saturday June 1st.
