Ten-man Derry City held on for a 0-0 draw at Shelbourne to keep their title hopes alive after Carndonagh man Sam Todd was sent to the line on the 35th minute in this League of Ireland clash on Monday night.

The red card for defender Todd issued 10 minutes before half-time, altered the game’s dynamic, with the Candystripes having been the better side up to that point.

Despite being a man down, Derry remained a threat in the second half. Ruaidhri Higgins' team earned considerable praise under the circumstances, contrasting with Shelbourne, who squandered a crucial opportunity to control their title destiny by testing goalkeeper Brian Maher only once in the entire match.

Derry City posed the first real threat when, in the 15th minute, Conor Kearns made a crucial save. A free kick to the edge of the area saw Ciaran Coll head the ball back into the penalty box, where Pat Hoban flicked it to Michael Duffy, whose well-struck volley was parried by the Shels goalkeeper.

The visitors looked comfortable throughout the first half, but the game shifted dramatically 10 minutes before the break when they were reduced to 10 men. Already on a yellow card, Todd was outwitted by Liam Burt and instinctively pulled him back, leaving referee Damian McGraith no choice but to issue a red card.

Despite this setback, Derry nearly took the lead just before half-time when Kearns passed the ball directly to Duffy, but the winger’s shot went straight to the goalkeeper.

It took Shelbourne an hour to register their first shot on target, a snapshot from Harry Wood that drew a smart save from Maher.

Neither team could muster the quality needed to break the deadlock, resulting in the sixth consecutive draw between the sides.
