'Results have been up and down at the moment, but we're remaining positive' - Watson

Finn Harps defender Jamie Watson hopes his side can turn their luck around this weekend with a victory against Wexford

Finn Harps man Jamie Watson states that while it’s been a disappointing period at the club the past few weeks, in terms of results, he admits that the squad still maintains their positive mindset as they hope to maintain their play-off position in the league.

Darren Murphy’s side returned to Finn Park for the first time since July 4 last Friday night, but once again, the home side fell to a one-goal defeat, with goals from John O'Sullivan and Guillermo Almirall, either side of a Jamie Watson equaliser, gave Bray Wanderers a 2-1 win.

The aftermath of the match left Murphy admitting that it was the most frustrating night he has experienced since being at Finn Harps, with both goals coming from set pieces, with the manager stating; “I'm extremely disappointed with the defending for the set pieces - it was absolutely criminal,” Murphy admitted.

Watson was no different as he portrayed similar sentiments adding that the team needs to turn their luck around, start scoring goals and seek out results as they enter the final stretch in this season’s league campaign.

“Yeah, like it was just a frustrating night overall last week, we had a lot of the ball and we were trying to build some chances, but the key to the game is trying to put the ball into the back of the net and we’re not doing that lately, and that’s been our downfall so far, it’s just a problem at the moment for us,” Watson told Donegal Live.

Regardless of current form, Watson’s aim for Harps is to finish the season strong and in the play-off position.

“I know the performances have been a little bit up and down lately but I remember at the start of the season I said that the teams who are going to push for promotion and get to the play-off are the teams that are going to finish the season the strongest,” he said.

“We have a lot of big games left and we hope that we can just build up a bit of momentum and finish the season strong and get to the play-offs.

“I know we’re saying the season has been up and down but it’s been far from negative. We’ve always stayed positive, and we still are positive.

“We are the only team who have remained in the play-off position all season and that’s really positive, we have been going through a spell where we have had some really tough games but we’ve still been putting it up to teams. Now it’s just about getting results and finishing the season strong.”

This Friday, harps will make the trip to Wexford, a place where they secured a 2-1 win back in March, and while a win is the main objective, Watson knows that Wexford will have to be kept under severe watch due to their strong scoring power up front, while also aiming to get goals themselves.

“We went to Wexford at the start of the season and we actually ended up getting a good result, I think we won 2-1 and we got a late goal in doing that, but what we know about them is that they have the most goals scored in the league out of any team, so our objective will be to keep them quiet while also focusing on getting on the scoreboard ourselves,” he said.

With Wexford only three points behind Harps in the league Watson and his side know that the pressure coming into the end of the season is mounting. The hope this Friday is that they can get back to winning ways.
