Death mourned of 1962 FAI Junior Cup winner Mickey Doherty

The death has taken place of noted Donegal footballer Mickey Doherty (Hutton).

A goalscorer in the 1962 FAI Junior Cup final for Swilly Rovers, he was one of the most accomplished players of his era.

Doherty, a native of Buncrana netted one of the Swilly Rovers goals in the 3-1 win over Castleview from Cork in the ’62 final at Dalymount Park. Gerry Bradley and Liam Blake were also on target for the Ramelton side as they became the first Donegal team to win the coveted prize.

Doherty also played with Buncrana Hearts, Buncrana Celtic and Nelson Celtic and was a formidable name on teams during an era when Summer Cups were in their heyday.

After he hung up his boots, Doherty took up refereeing and continued involvement at administrative level.

Earlier this year, Cockhill Celtic representatives visited Doherty’s home after they won the FAI Junior Cup, beating Gorey Rangers on penalties and become the first Donegal team to do so since Swilly 62 years previously.

Swilly Rovers said they were “saddened” to learn of his passing while Buncrana Hearts also paid tribute to their former player.

Late of St Mary’s Road in Buncrana, he is survived by his wife Mary and children Seamus, Regina, Declan, Kieran, Connie and Tina and a wide circle of family and friends.

He will be laid to rest on Sunday in Cockhill cemetery following Requiem Mass at St Mary’s Oratory.
