Daniel O'Donnell on RTÉ’s Prime Time on Thursday night
Daniel O'Donnell has stressed the dangers of online scams operating in his name.
The legendary Donegal singer and songwriter was a guest of Miriam O'Callaghan on RTÉ’s Prime Time and told of scammers via his social media channels, asking followers to follow links and process cash payments for personalised videos and appearances.
“It's mainly on the Facebook page that this is happening, and it's been going on for a long time,” he said. “You know if something's put up on the Facebook page and there's a place for people to comment, then these fake pages are set up and they comment or thank you very much for your love and support if you want to private message me you know click this link.
“If somebody does that I'm told that they can be brought away to another place and then they're talking to them and very often they'll say could you send me money for whatever reason? Some people, who have been scammed, are sending money.
Daniel, a native of Kincasslagh, says the only time he will ever charge is for songs, album releases, and concerts.

“The one thing that's important for me to get out is that the only thing that you pay for about me is to buy a record or download a record or whatever it is now. There are announcements of a new CD or a ticket for a concert. In regards to meet and greets, personal meetings or messages, I've done those for 40 years for free so I'm not going to start charging now. I did 20 this evening and 20 yesterday evening for Christmas and birthdays and things like that, so if I had to charge for that I would just hang my boots up.
“I've been fortunate enough to have a great career so I don't need to charge for things like meet and great so the only thing you ever need to buy from me is a ticket for a concert or a record. There's nothing else that's been charged for. My social media channels are being run by my record company and I will never ask for money and I will never ever come on saying private message me”
