As Cahir Gormley lost out in his Ulster Elite semi-final, the path was paved for the latest instalment of Matthew McCole’s rivalry with Jon McConnell.
Illies Golden Gloves light-middleweight Gormley fell to McConnell in Thursday night’s 71kgs semi-final in Belfast.
McConnell took a unanimous decision from the judges to move into the final - where another Illies boxer, defending champ McCole, awaits.
Gormley won an Irish Intermediate title in October when beating Brian Morgan at the National Stadium.
McConnell proved too strong and he moves into the final with McCole.
The Ulster Boxing Council have announced that the finals, which were scheduled for Friday night, will now be held on Saturday at 12noon at the Girdwood Community Hub.
Last January, McCole overcame McConnell on his way to winning the Ulster Elite crown. In 2023, McConnell won an Irish Elite semi-final against McCole and the 22-year-old Belfast man is the Irish Elite champion having beaten Wayne Kelly in the final back in November.
