An early penalty by Republic of Ireland amateur international Lee McColgan fired Cockhill Celtic into the next round of the FAI Intermediate Cup.

Liffey started brightly playing in but Cockhill won a penalty in their first meaningful attack when Caolan McColgan was impeded in the box. Lee McColgan dispatched the spot kick high to the goalkeeper's left.

Cockhill came close to doubling the lead when Caolan McColgan was played in but his touch forced him wide and his shot was straight at the keeper.

On 18 minutes, Liffey had the chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty after Harry Doherty brought downa visiting attacker.

However, Doherty pulled off a fantastic save low to his left to maintain the lead. From the resultant corner, a free header was cleared off the line by Jason Breslin.

In truth, that was as close as Liffey came to equalising with Cockhill making the running for the remainder of the half closing close through Stephen Duffy on three occasions.

First, he dragged a shot wide after being released by a deft Garbhan Friel flick, then saw goalbound efforts well saved by Liffey goalkeeper.

The second half followed a similar pattern with the home side creating a host of chances but failing to put the game to bed, with Duffy and Christy McLaughlin going close.

The longer the game went on it looked like they might regret the missed chances but while Liffey exerted some pressure late on, clear chances were at a premium with Doherty and his defence standing firm.
