Former jockey Nina Carberry to seek Fine Gael nomination in EU elections

Former jockey Nina Carberry is to seek a nomination to run as a Fine Gael candidate in the European elections.

The decision of the former Cheltenham winner to seek the nomination in the Midlands North West constituency was announced in an email and video sent to constituency members on Monday.

Ms Carberry, 39, has appeared on RTE’s Dancing With The Stars and was a judge on the Ireland’s Fittest Family competition since retiring as a jockey.

There are five seats available in the constituency in the European poll in June.

In her message to party members, Ms Carberry said: “In the Ireland and Europe of today, it is more important than ever for those who believe they can make a difference to put their hand up to make things happen.

“As a mother of two, that is why I want to contest the European elections for Fine Gael this June to ensure a bright future for all.”

She added: “The Midlands North West constituency is vast and diverse, spanning rural, urban and commuter belt areas.

“Having spent two decades travelling the country, meeting people through racing and community events, I have seen first-hand the challenges faced by these communities.”

Her message continued: “I would consider it a huge privilege to run for election for Fine Gael and have the chance to represent the people of Midlands North West.

“I have proven myself in sport and business, and look forward to bringing my drive and determination to this new opportunity.”

In the last European elections, Mairead McGuinness and Maria Walsh won seats for Fine Gael in the constituency.

Colm Markey replaced Ms McGuinness when she stepped down to become a European Commissioner.
