Man recovered by coast guard after falling from ferry into Shannon Estuary

A man who fell from a ferry into the Shannon Estuary has been rescued by the coast guard.

A coast guard helicopter recovered the person who has been taken to hospital.

Marine Rescue Sub Centre Valentia received a report after 9.20am that a person had fallen overboard from a ferry that takes people between Killimer in Co Clare and Tarbert in Co Kerry.

Gardai were alerted after 10am that a man had gone into the water near Tarbert.

An extensive search-and-rescue mission involving a fleet of vessels was initiated immediately, including Ballybunion and Kilkee coast guard units and Kilrush and Fenit RNLI.

The person was located and recovered by the coast guard helicopter and transferred to Limerick University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Gardai were also at the scene on Sunday to assist emergency services as part of the multi-agency operation.
