Cyclist in his 80s dies following Co Meath road crash

A male cyclist aged in his 80s has died following a road crash in Co Meath.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses after the vehicle which was in collision with the pensioner failed to remain at the scene at Batterstown, Ballivor on Friday morning.

A Garda spokesperson said shortly after 9.59am, emergency services responded to fatal hit-and-run collision on the R156.

“The collision involved a cyclist and a vehicle that failed to remain at the scene,” they said.

“The male cyclist, aged in his 80s, was discovered unresponsive, and removed to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

“The road is currently closed for technical examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.

“Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward.”

They have asked for any road users who may have camera footage, including dashcam, and were travelling in the area of Batterstown, Ballivor between 9.30am and 10am on Friday to make this footage available to gardai.

They said they are particularly interested in the movements of heavy goods vehicles (rigid or articulated trucks) in the area at the time.
