Woman canvassing for Catherine Connolly allegedly assaulted in Dublin

A woman who was canvassing in support of Catherine Connolly in north Dublin was allegedly assaulted.

The incident occurred as Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvass, a party spokesman said.

A video posted online appears to show a man approaching a canvass team for Ms Connolly and shout threats to “deck” and “slap” some of them.

It was reported to gardai that two females were assaulted on North Strand Road in Dublin shortly before 4pm on Friday.

They did not require medical treatment at the scene but gardai said they understand one of the females has since attended the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for further assessment.

They have appealed to anyone with camera footage of the incident to provide it to gardai.

A spokesman for Sinn Fein said: “A man assaulted a young woman who was part of a team getting out the vote near the Five Lamps in the north inner city.

“The gardai were called and are now investigating the matter.

“The woman has been brought to hospital for medical examination.

“This happened as Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvass team, which is now continuing with its work of getting the vote out.”

People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy issued his solidarity with the supporters of Ms Connolly involved in the incident.

“They’re afraid of a united movement of hope and equality,” he said.

An Garda Siochana has appealed to anyone with information or camera footage in relation to the incident to contact Store Street Garda station on 01 666 8000.
