Gardai are investigating after a man was found dead following an assault in Cork city.
An assault reportedly took place on Lower John Street/Knapps Square at approximately 7.50pm on Monday, gardai said.
A man, aged in his 30s, was subsequently pronounced dead at a home on Carroll’s Quay and his body taken to Cork University Hospital.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Watercourse Road Garda Station.
A family liaison officer has been assigned to support the man’s family.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward, particularly taxi drivers and motorists in the area at the time, or anyone who may have camera footage from the vicinity from around 7.30pm to 9pm.
