Gardaí tell Kildare court that man had different reg plate in his car when he was stopped

Gardaí told Naas District Court that a man they stopped had a different registration plate in his car when he was stopped by them.

James Quinn, with an address given as Ballyfore Cross, Edenderry, County Offaly, was detected by gardaí driving at 165 kilometres per hour in a 120 km/h zone on the M4 in Kilcock on November 3, 2020.

Judge Desmond Zaidan was told that the 28-year-old had an English registration plate on his car, but an Irish one was also found in his car at the time. 

Gardaí who stopped him quizzed him over the presence of the other plate, but he was ultimately not charged in relation to the plate.

The judge was told that the road was frosty at the time of the offence, and that Mr Quinn has seven previous convictions, including one for Section 2 assault and one for driving with no insurance.

Defending barrister Aisling Murphy told Judge Zaidan that her client was running late for work on the date in question, and he 'decided to take a risk.'

She added that was remorseful over the offence.

Ms Murphy asked the court to deal with the matter by way of a fine, as he needs his licence for his job, and noted that no collision took place despite Mr Quinn's driving on the date in question.

Judge Zaidan said that there were 'distinguishing features' in the case due to the presence of the second reg plate.

He ultimately decided to fine Mr Quinn €750 for dangerous driving.

He also disqualified him for two years.
