The maintenance of planters in Newbridge was a cause for concern for one political representative.

Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender voiced his concerns at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District, which was held at the MERITS building in Naas on Wednesday, July 19.

Cllr Pender asked Kildare County Council (KCC) to outline who is responsible for the maintenance of the planters installed around the town, 'by either the Strategic Projects and Public Realm team or the Municipal District Office?'

A representative for KCC told Cllr Pender that, following the recent restructuring of directorates, the Transportation, Mobility and Open Spaces Directorate has taken over responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of these works.

They explained in a report: "A process is being put in place to address this issue.

"There is no maintenance contract associated with the installation of the planters installed in Newbridge."

The representative added: "The Strategic Projects Public Realm team are responsible for the delivery of projects and the maintenance element will fall to the Transport, Mobility and Open Spaces department, with provision to be made in next year’s Budget."

In response, Cllr Pender said: "It's been nearly two years since the planters were installed.

"There doesn't seem to be any forethought or budget here, or even any engagement with locals. What happens between now and then?"

His sentiments were echoed by Fianna Fáil Cllr Noel Heavey, who added: "It's a very reasonable point to make."

Another member of KCC told both Cllr Pender and Cllr Heavey that the council would look into the matter further.
