It may be just Round 2 of the group sections of the Joe Mallon Motors Senior and The Auld Shebeen Athy Intermediate Football Championships but there are games that could have major significance following last weekend's opening group games.
Last week the standout game at senior level was undoubtedly the Sarsfields v Athy one on Friday evening at Manguard Park.
A six point win for Athy certainly has catapulted Vinny Walsh's team to the forefront of affairs and while it is a blow to The Sash, have no doubt the boys with the Sash have not gone away by any manner of means.
But this Friday evening sees another major game involving Sarsfields are they are due to take on county champions Naas, who are aiming for three senior titles in-a-row, ironically last achieved by their opponents back in the early '50s.
Naas, without setting the place alight, had a comfortable win over Maynooth on Sunday last and with a few of their star players still to kick a ball in anger in this season's championship, Friday's game could yet have a major bearing on how this competition runs out.
Of course remember that three teams qualify out of the winners' group (A and B) with the top two going straight to the quarter-final, the third to a pre-quarter, so regardless of how Friday's game pans out all will not be lost one way or another.
The other game in that group will see Maynooth, beaten by Naas last weekend, take on Athy who had an impressive win over Sarsfields.
Elsewhere in group A, Celbridge and Clane will be expecting to add to their wins last weekend against Clogherinkoe and Carbury respectively.
In Group C St Laurence's take on Confey, both lost last weekend, while Eadestown take on Raheens in the second game of that group.
Group D will see Moorefield, who defeated Kilcock last week play Ballyteague with Johnstownbridge playing Kilcock who were somewhat unlucky to do down to Moorefield on Sunday.
Expect wins for Naas, Clane, Celbridge, Athy, Moorefield, Eadestown and Johnstownbridge while the St Laurence's v Confey game is probably hardest of them all to suggest a winner but the loss of Padraig Fogarty through injury should certainly give
Confey a real opportunity to knock-up a win.
