Bail was granted for an 18-year-old man accused of robbery and assault offences.
Judge Desmond Zaidan made the decision at Naas District Court on Thursday, November 9 last.
The allegations relate to Shane Kelly, of Morristown Crescent, The Paddocks in Newbridge.
His family were present in the courtroom with him on the date in question.
Garda Detective Seamus Doyle alleged that Mr Kelly had committed the offences on Edward Street in Newbridge on November 3 last.
The court was told that the accused had approached a male on the street and proceeded to pin him against a wall, assaulted him and robbed him of €8 in coins.
Det Doyle also alleged that Mr Kelly threatened to stab the alleged injured party.
He further said that Shane Kelly was subsequently identified by CCTV footage.
Det Doyle added: "He admitted to the offence when he was detention on the night, but later retracted it (his admission) after being shown footage of the incident by gardaí.
"He denied it after seeing how nasty the footage was."
Speaking on behalf of his client, defending solicitor Tim Kennelly said that the alleged injured party had been shouting over at Mr Kelly, and insulted both him and his mother, so he went over to confront the man.
Mr Kennelly also insisted that his client never robbed the man of any money.
He also said that Mr Kelly made admissions to another assault in Newbridge: "He said: 'I actually assaulted a separate lad in the back street, on Eyre Street.'"
Judge Zaidan then interjected and said that he would grant bail for Mr Kelly.
He placed the accused on his own bond of €1,000.
ALLEGED 'RUDE GESTURES'
However, when this was heard, a separate garda present in the courtroom interrupted the judge to tell him that Mr Kelly had been making 'rude gestures' towards gardaí while he (the judge) made his decision.
Mr Kelly denied ever making such gestures.
Judge Zaidan adjourned the case to April 18, 2024.
