The Irish-Polish Battalion pay their respects to Private Seán Rooney

The Irish-Polish Battalion in South Lebanon this morning remembered their fallen comrade, Private Seán Rooney, on the first anniversary of his passing. 

Private Rooney was killed while on a UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon on December 14, 2022. The 23-year-old Private Rooney was driving an armoured jeep when a UN peacekeeping convoy in which he was traveling came under attack in the south Lebanon town of Al-Aqbiya.

"At dawn this morning in South Lebanon, the entire Irish-Polish Battalion paraded in silence to honour the memory of our fallen comrade, Pte Seán Rooney, on his first anniversary," 123 Infantry Battalion UNIFIL posted. "Later, we will honour his memory at the Tibnine Memorial. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."
 
Irish United Nations Veterans Association (IUNVA) Post 19 held a wreath laying ceremony  at his Newtowncunningham graveside on Sunday last, attended by Private Rooney’s family, including his parents Paul Rooney and Natasha McCloskey and his fiancé, Holly McConnellogue.
