An update has been given for the roads programme pertaining to the Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD).
The update was heard in the form of a presentation at the latest MD meeting, which was held on Friday, February 2 last.
Kildare County Council (KCC) Area Engineer Cyril Buggie delivered the presentation before local councillors at the meeting, in addition to dozens of members of the public in the Chamber’s public gallery.
He outlined the number of staff in the MD’s roads section, and their respective positions.
Mr Buggie also gave a financial summary of 2023: road improvement schemes cost €2.7 million; road maintenance schemes cost around €738,000; climate adaptation cost €500,000; street sweeping and maintenance allocation cost around €3 million; safety improvement grants cost €67,000; and Local Property Tax-allocated projects / footpath projects cost €470,000.
In total, roughly €7.5 million has been spent by the MD office.
Mr Buggie also displayed photos showing examples of the road improvements and maintenance projects across the MD, in addition to safety improvements made in various areas across the MD,
He went on to explain that when it comes to winter maintenance, his department treats 10 different routes in the MD, with the help of 25 drivers.
In terms of the department’s decision making process, Mr Buggie said that the department uses a 'web-based programme', in addition to using information from Transport Infrastructure Ireland weather systems and input from Met Éireann forecasts.
Regarding the plans for the MD this year, Mr Buggie said that there are plans for further projects.
Similar to 2023’s projects, these would include: road improvement schemes; road maintenance schemes; climate adaptations; safety improvement grants; maintenance funding and street sweeping works; and Local Property Tax / footpath projects.
Upon the conclusion of the presentation, Mr Buggie gave thanks to 'the guys on the ground' who were and continue to be involved in the MD projects.
