A nine-month custodial sentence was imposed on a man at Naas District Court for a theft offence committed in Kildare Village Retail Outlet.

Substitute Judge Fiona Brennan made the decision on Thursday, February 1, in relation to Joe Joyce, with an address given as 146 Springdale Road, Raheny, Dublin 5, County Dublin, but who is currently serving a custodial sentence for other matters.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to committing the theft of clothes at a shop with Kildare Village on October 5, 2022.

The clothes were not recovered.

Gardaí told Judge Brennan that Mr Joyce has a total of 79 previous convictions, 28 of which are for theft offences.

It was also heard that he is due for release in December of 2025.

Defending barrister Mark Gibbons told the judge that his client has had issues with both heroin and alcohol in the past.

However, he said that his client is doing well in prison, adding: "He has enhanced prisoner status."

Mr Gibbons also said: "He is in a rehab course and is also undertaking an educational course," and he proceeded to hand in a letter to the judge detailing his client's progress in prison.

In addition, Mr Gibbons pointed to his client's guilty plea as a mitigating factor in the case.

Judge Brennan said that she took notice of Mr Joyce's personal circumstances, but also pointed to the fact that the clothes stolen by him were not recovered.

She sentenced Mr Joyce to nine months in custody, which will run concurrently with his present sentence.
