“I have faith in her”: Praise given to Kildare court defendant

The case was heard at Naas District Court on Thursday, April 4 last.

A Kildare woman who fell into the throes of addiction was praised by her sponsor at Naas District Court on Thursday, April 4 last.

Back in May of 2022, Judge Desmond Zaidan was told that a mix of cocaine and cannabis was allegedly found during a search at a property in Suncroft conducted on May 22, 2021.

The drugs belonged to Megan Gannon, with an address listed as 3583 Churchview Estate in Suncroft.

A Garda Sergeant present on the date in question told Judge Desmond Zaidan that while it was initially suspected that the alleged drugs could be worth around €4,000, it actually turned out that the cocaine was worth €875, while the cannabis was worth €280.

The Sergeant added that the 32-year-old had intended to sell and supply the drugs to other people.

On the latest court date, Ms Gannon pleaded guilty to the offences.

The court was told by Ms Gannon's solicitor, Mathew Byrne, that she had intended to sell the drugs solely to friends and family.

He also flagged that his client fully co-operated with gardaí, and had addiction issues herself.

However, she has since completed a rehabilitation programme.

The court was also informed that Ms Gannon's sponsor was present in court with her.

Ms Gannon's sponsor told the judge: "She is doing very well, and I have faith in her.

"She has really turned her life around, Judge."

The sponsor added that Ms Gannon has been keeping up with her appointments with addiction services in order to address her addiction issues.

When a garda also told Judge Zaidan that Ms Gannon had been selling the drugs in order to feed her habit at the time, the judge decided to place Ms Gannon on a 12-month peace bond, worth €400.
