Kildare boy (6) joins Taoiseach at Down Syndrome Ireland launch

A Newbridge boy (6) had the time of his life when he got to meet the most important figure in the State, this week.

Conn Brennan from Kildare was among group of members from Down Syndrome Ireland who were invited by Taoiseach Micheál Martin to launch the 'Lots of Socks Campaign.'

Speaking at the event, Conn’s mum, Marie Brennan said: “Conn and I are delighted to attend the launch of World Down Syndrome Day, and meet the Taoiseach.

“It's so important to raise awareness for people with Down syndrome living in Ireland, and all that they can achieve with a little bit of help.

“It's important to talk about the help that the Government can give Down Syndrome Ireland and people who are living with Down syndrome.”

The event kicked off a month-long celebration ahead of World Down Syndrome Day, which takes place on March 21 every year to celebrate people with Down syndrome all over the world.

DSI has launched eye-catching, limited-edition socks designed by 9-year-old Rachel Gillanders from Co. Monaghan as part of the 'Lots of Socks Campaign.'

Taoiseach Micheál Martin was on hand to help members of Down Syndrome Ireland launch the campaign and to mark the significance of World Down Syndrome Day.

An Taoiseach said: "I’m delighted to welcome members of Down Syndrome Ireland to Government Buildings ahead of World Down Syndrome Day.

“World Down Syndrome Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of all those with Down syndrome and to encourage society to support them in chasing their ambitions.

“I urge everyone across the country - whether it’s in school, in the workplace or at home - to give it Lots of Socks over the next month in support of DSI, whose important work helps members to reach their full potential."

Will Cronin, Interim CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland added: “We’re thrilled to kick off our month-long celebration ahead of World Down Syndrome Day; A time to recognise the incredible abilities and unique perspectives of people with Down syndrome.

“This year’s theme is 'Support Our Dreams', and we’re committed to building a world where people with Down syndrome can achieve any and all dreams they have.

“Show your support this March with funky socks, fundraising, and most importantly by promoting awareness and equality.”

DSI is asking schools, communities and workplaces to host Lots of Socks parties wearing their most vibrant socks while raising awareness and vital funds for Down Syndrome Ireland.

The Lots of Socks campaign is a simple yet powerful way to show support.

Participants are encouraged to wear their most colourful and mismatched socks, symbolising everyone’s uniqueness. As Down syndrome comes from an extra copy of a chromosome, which look like socks under a microscope, fun socks are a perfect way raise awareness.

By hosting parties, raising awareness and making donations, they will help DSI continue its vital work in supporting people with Down syndrome and their families.
