A Senator representing County Kildare has welcomed the reinstatement of midwifery-led clinics in Athy.
Fianna Fáil Senator for Kildare South Fiona O’Loughlin said that she welcomes the recent commitment given by the Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, that midwifery-led antenatal clinics at Athy Primary Care Centre will resume normal operations this week.
In addition, Minister Carroll MacNeill said that "every effort" would be made to ensure that the services "continue without interruption".
The reassurances come after the services were suddenly withdrawn last week due to "unplanned staff leave" (according to the Health Service Executive / HSE) before being reinstated following an outcry. The HSE also apologised to the women who had their appointments changed at short notice.
Speaking in the Seanad, Senator O'Loughlin said: "Pregnant women need a reliable, consistent midwifery service. At a time that is already filled with anxiety and uncertainty, they should not be told at the last minute to travel to Portlaoise hospital because their usual clinic has been cancelled."

The Newbridge-based politician continued: "This is a vital service that must remain constant... We need to do everything we can to support women throughout their pregnancy, not add to their stress.”
"I welcome the commitment to reinstate the midwifery-led clinics at Athy Primary Care Centre."
"I will continue to liase with the stakeholders to ensure they are up and running in a timely manner, and I will continue to advocate for consistent and local maternal care."
Senator O'Loughlin concluded by referring to Minister Carroll MacNeill's commitment as "a win for the women of Athy and surrounding areas".
