Local Fianna Fáil Minister James Lawless TD has welcomed the announcement this week by the National Transport Authority (NTA) of new Child Leap Card products, which will provide significantly reduced fares for young passengers across the Dublin Commuter area, including Co Kildare.

The new fares, which take effect from Monday, September 1, will deliver a 67% discount on adult fares for all under-18s, improving on the 50% discount previously in place.

Minister Lawless said: “This is a very positive development for families and young people right across Dublin and the commuter belt. Affordable public transport is essential in ensuring that children and students can access school, sports, social and cultural activities without placing undue financial pressure on households.

“The expansion of the Child Leap Card discount is a welcome step in making sustainable travel more attractive, accessible and affordable for the next generation.”

The new child products apply across the Dublin Commuter Leap fare zones (Zones 2, 3 and 4), covering rail, bus and Luas journeys into the central Dublin zone. Onward travel within the city is included at no additional cost.

For example, children commuting from towns such as Kilcock, and Sallins/Naas currently pay €16.00 per week. From September, the new weekly fare will be €10.60, representing a 33% saving.

Minister Lawless added: “Public transport must work for families. These improved discounts match the percentage savings already available to children in the Dublin City Zone, and will make a real difference to those commuting daily into the city.

“I want to thank the NTA for listening to public representatives and to families who raised concerns earlier this year, and for acting quickly to put a fairer system in place.”

The new products will be available for daily, weekly and monthly Child Leap fares and can be purchased via the Leap Top-Up App or at www.leapcard.ie
