An online petition is calling on Kildare County Council (KCC) to close set of archways in one County Kildare town.

The petition, which was set up by Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender over the weekend, is currently live on Change.org.

Explaining the reason why the petition was set up, Cllr Pender claimed that on a daily basis, cars "squeeze through the Francis Street and Thomas Street archways off Main Street in Newbridge".

He elaborated: "Parents and schoolchildren are forced to share these narrow, dangerous spaces with vehicles, and there are near misses almost every morning.

"It’s time to put safety first; I’m calling on KCC to pedestrianise the arches permanently, keeping them open for people walking, cycling, and using mobility aids while ensuring access for emergency services."

Cllr Pender also outlined the closure request — specifically, he is asking KCC to commence the statutory process under the Roads Act 1993 and the Road Traffic Act 1994 to:

  • Publish a Notice of Intention to permanently close the arched sections of Francis Street and Thomas Street to vehicles
  • Carry out the required public consultation and Garda consultation
  • Make the necessary Orders to ensure these archway roads are pedestrian-only, with exceptions for emergency access if required

He concluded: "We believe pedestrianising the archways will improve safety, accessibility, and the overall character of Newbridge town centre."

As of the time of publication, the petition has reached 64 verified signatures.

The Leinster Leader has asked KCC for comment regarding the petition.
