Man stole groceries from Dunnes Stores outlet in Kildare

A man stole €260 worth of groceries from a Dunne Stores supermarket in north Kildare.

Before Naas District Court was Casian Simion, 24, whose address was given as Beach Lane, Sandy Acre, Portrane, Dublin.

Sgt Ruth Coleman told the court that the defendant left Dunnes Stores at Manor Mills, Maynooth with the items and passed all points of payment and the gardaí were called.

The sergeant added that all of the items were recovered.

Solicitor Joe Coonan said the defendant is the parent of young girls and had been working packing fruit and vegetables prior to losing his job.

He said he was due to start another job on the day of the court hearing.

Judge Desmond Zaidan commented that the likes of Dunnes Stores deploy technology and staff in a bid to combat shoplifting and that it could cost €5,000 a day or more.

He said any money spent on this is passed on to customers.

He also said security staff are sometimes placed at risk because not all shoplifters “react passively” when detected.

He adjourned the case to December 3 for a charitable donation of €1,000.
