Kildare County Council has offered a detailed report with regard to bringing derelict and unused buildings on Main Street, Leixlip into use.

The update follows a question tabled by Social Democrats councillor, Nuala Killeen at a recent meeting of Celbridge Leixlip Municipal District, held on Friday, October 24 2025.

In its report, the council confirmed that the compulsory purchase of a number of properties on Main Street commenced in June 2024.

However, the property owners submitted objections and An Bord Pleanála held oral hearings in November 2024 and February 2025.

What transpired next is that An Coimisiún Pleanála annulled the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) by Order ABP in April 2025.

The reason given for this at the time was that the lands currently benefited from a live planning application due to expire on 16 November 2025.

According to the council, the Town Regeneration Team “is aware that works have commenced on some of the properties and will continue to monitor the situation.”

The council further confirmed that the Town Regeneration Team met with the owners of several other properties on the Main Street, and works to improve the appearance of Main Street took place after this meeting.

The report concluded by stating: “The owners are continuing to engage and update the team with plans for development and reoccupation of the properties.

“The Town Regeneration Team will continue to monitor progress and offer any assistance

and supports available to bring vacant and derelict properties back into use.”
