"No" to request for a bin outside Kildare's busiest courthouse

Naas Courthouse is open virtually every day and Tidy Towns volunteers are 'frequently required to pick up litter'

"No" to request for bin outside Kildare's busiest courthouse

There’s been a refusal to a request for a new bin outside Naas Courthouse.

Independent councillor Bill Clear said litters has increased because of the “significant number of court sittings now taking place.”

He requested a  solar-powered compactor (Bigbelly) bin outside the building and said Naas Tidy Towns volunteers have witnessed an increase in litter and “are frequently required to pick up rubbish from outside the courthouse.

Cllr Clear said cleaning outside the premises was not the responsibility of the Courts Service.

Naas Mayor Seamie Moore complained about rubbish left on the window sills and said the steps need to be powerwashed.

Kildare County Council said it acknowledges  concerns about increased littering and added a standard litter bin is currently in place (but Cllr Clear said this located closer to an adjacent business premises than the corthouse).

KCC also said that while a compactor bin could enhance waste management “such units involve significant costs” and limited resources mean it cannot be provided.

KCC also said the request will be kept under review should funding become available "in the context of future funding opportunities."
