Last weekend, Naas Roads Policing Unit intercepted a jeep towing a trailer on Kildare's M9.
The maximum speed limit for any vehicle towing a trailer is 80km/h- with one exception - HGVs are 90km/h on motorways and 80km/h on other routes.
This motorist was travelling well above that limit.
The motorist was issued with a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN) of €160 and three penalty points.

An Garda Síochána Kildare make the following points in relation to towing vehicles:
“Why does the 80km/h limit exist?
It’s not just about obeying the law; it’s about physics and safety. When you tow a trailer:
Stability: High speeds increase the risk of 'snaking' or swaying, which can quickly lead to a loss of control or a jack-knife situation.
Braking distance: The added weight significantly increases the time and distance required to stop safely.
Reaction time: Things go wrong much faster when towing. The lower speed limit gives you that vital extra second to react to hazards.
Please slow down and arrive alive."
