Gardaí based in County Kildare have warned people not to take "an auld chance" when it comes to committing one particular road traffic offence.

As explained by the official An Garda Síochána Kildare page on Facebook, driving with insurance on the roads "is not optional", it is mandatory.

The account continued: "It’s required on every car on our roads; so we’re scratching our heads as to why this driver didn’t get the brief.

"We’ve concluded they did what many others do — couldn’t care less and took an auld chance."

According to the page, the motorist's car was subsequently seized by the Naas Roads Policing Unit.

In addition, the owner of the vehicle must now pay a €125 impound fee and appear in court.

Furthermore, the page pointed out that the motorist could face a two-year driving ban, a fine of up to €5,000 and / or up to six months in jail.

"Was it worth it? Not in this case, and it won’t be the next time," the page added. "No insurance, no excuses, no mercy."

The page concluded by issuing the following warning to the general public: "Think before you take the chance."
