A total of 53 people came before the courts in Naas for burglary between January and September 2025

Naas in Co Kildare was among the top 10 District Court areas in Ireland for burglary offences in the first nine months of 2025, according to new figures from the Irish Courts Service released by a MEP.

A total of 53 people came before the courts in Naas for burglary between January and September 2025.

Of those, 41 appeared before the District Court, while a further 12 were sent forward for trial in the Circuit Court.

Nationally, 1,187 people appeared before the District Court for burglary offences during the same period, with a further 347 sent to the Circuit Court. In total, 1,534 people faced court proceedings for burglary across the State.

The figures show that a relatively small number of repeat offenders are responsible for a large proportion of burglary cases.

While 1,187 individuals appeared before the District Court, they accounted for 1,771 separate burglary cases. In the Circuit Court, 529 offenders were responsible for 729 cases.

Dublin recorded the highest number of people before the courts for burglary, with 622 cases across both the District and Circuit Courts. Cork and Limerick followed, while Clonmel recorded 60 cases.

Waterford, Naas, Mullingar, Wexford, Tralee and Bray also featured in the top 10 court areas for burglary offences.

At the other end of the scale, Castlebar, Carrick-on-Shannon and Ballina recorded the lowest numbers of people before the courts for burglary.

Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú said the winter months remain a peak period for burglary, particularly in rural areas, due to darker evenings.

She has reiterated Garda advice for people to avoid posting holiday photos on social media that indicate they are away from home and to remain alert to suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.

Ní Mhurchú has called for a range of measures to tackle burglary, including ending the temporary release of burglars from prison. According to figures from the Irish Prison Service, 38 burglars were on temporary release as of 23 June 2025.

She has also called for increased funding for community safety initiatives, including a doubling of the Community Safety Fund, more funding for community CCTV, and expanded grant support for home security alarms for older people living alone.

The Community Safety Fund uses money seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau and An Garda Síochána to support local projects such as diversion programmes for repeat and young offenders, drug awareness initiatives, restorative justice schemes, community CCTV and Community Alert programmes.

Ní Mhurchú has asked the Department of Justice to better inform community groups about the 2026 funding allocation, consider increasing the fund, and notify politicians and local leaders when the application process opens.

She has also urged the Minister for Justice to introduce a robust plan to deal with repeat burglary offenders, particularly in rural communities.
